Mission
The mission of CAUPRS and its members is to:
- Promote the teaching of Laser Refractive Surgery (LRS) to ophthalmology residents and medical students.
- Promote clinical research in LRS.
- Promote a scientific approach to the clinical practice of LRS.
- Standardize best practices and share knowledge with the goal of improving patient outcomes.
- Raise awareness of LRS in the general population in a professional manner.
- Act as a resource for the media for information about LRS.
- Act as a resource for research ethics and best practice in LRS.
Facts:
- LRS has been performed successfully for over two decades in Canada (since 1990).
- There are over close to 100 000 LRS procedures performed each year in Canada, making LRS the second most common (primary) ophthalmic surgery.
- LRS has one of the highest patient satisfaction rates compared to other elective surgical procedures.
Canadian Ophthalmic Research Centre (CORC)
- The CORC is overseen by CAUPRS and facilitates collaborative research work among cataract and LRS surgeons.
- The CORC also has an Ethics Review Board (ERB) aiming at determining the ethical acceptability of research involving patients undergoing corneal and intraocular procedures.
- The primary objective of CORC’s ERB is to protect the rights and welfare of patients and optimize study protocols.
- Research proposal can be sent to ethics@cauprs.org.
UPDATE: Please note that the ERB at CORC is closed and is no longer accepting research proposals or applications. We appreciate the contributions and support we received during our operations.
